A MID-VICTORIAN MAHOGANY EXTENDING DINING TABLE.

950 GBP

Mahogany Extending Dining Table c.1880, Antique mahogany extending dining table (c.1880) for sale and six walnut, leather embossed, chairs. Easily and comfortably seats 10 for a feast when fully extended, even 12 if they bunch up at the ends. Table 41.5" wide 105cm, 49.5" long 125cm, and 29" high 74cm when smallest. 2 x extensions, both 16.5" long 42cm, making up to a total of 82.5" long 210cm or almost 7 feet. Sheraton legs, with brass foot and original ceramic casters. Rectangular top with channelled edges and canted corners, together with two additional leaves, the winding mechanism has a metallic trade label for Joseph Fitter. Winding handle for screwed extender is below the table leaves. The winding mechanism is by Joseph Fitter (circa 1870). Joseph Fitter (b.1842) traded as a Birmingham machinist and applied for a 'British pattern' for an extending dining-table in 1861. He is known to have been trading from 210 Cheapside, London, in 1870. The winder plaque confirms this. The chairs have beautiful carved backs with leather embossed seats (original horsehair and webbing) and brass studs (like door studs). We've had this in our house for 22 years and it has had constant use, including family gatherings of 10 and more with plenty of room for all. Whilst it was an awesome sight when I had it new (well, new to me) please don't think it is pristine any longer. It has, of course, had 22 years of wear and tear and needs a little time with fine grade steel wool and colourant to bring it back to perfect condition. This is actually really easy to do, surprisingly, and once this is done (either by yourself or a restorer) you will have furniture that will be a beautiful centrepiece and talking point for any grand dining room.
