Pair of Genuine Vintage 1950's Early Model Kandya Jason Chairs by Carl Jacobs. Mid Century Design Classics. Highly Collectable. Used Condition.
The pair of Jason chairs being offered for sale here were designed by Carl Jacobs from Denmark and manufactured in Birch plywood by the British Company Kandya in the 1950's. Such early models with wooden legs are highly sought after Mid Century design classics (a later option incorporated metal legs). Their simple lines and pleasing curves have earned them longevity. The Kandya manufacturer's plate is still present on both chairs.
Examples of these very chairs are currently on show at the Victoria and Albert Museum as part of its world first exhibition celebrating plywood - which is due to run until 12 November 2017. The V&A describes plywood as the material of the modern world and says it has an intriguing history, as well as a place in many a design conscious modern home. The V&A also says plywood is more popular than ever right now, and that its aesthetic is central to contemporary design and making with its exposed edges, simple joints and wood grain visible.
These stylish, comfortable, lightweight and stackable chairs are highly versatile pieces of furniture. They make a real statement and are useful not only throughout the home (in the living room, dining room, kitchen, or bedroom) but also in an office, as well as in a range of commercial environments.
The chairs have tapering splayed wooden legs typical of Danish design of the 1950's. The seat and back of the chairs were created by folding a single sheet of flexible Birch plywood which wraps around the chair and joins below the seat. These chairs used simpler technology to bend plywood to achieve the same effect as the famous American husband and wife designers Charles and Jay Eames were trying to create around the same time.
Size: Height approximately 72 cm. Seat height approximately 43 cm. Width approximately 51 cm. Depth approximately 43 cm.
These chic chairs are in a used, unrestored condition. They are solid, sturdy pieces. The chairs have no woodworm, or missing or damaged or repaired components, and have retained their slightly flexible upper body structure. Glue used to fasten the plywood on the undersides of the chairs is visible if one turns them upside down. Overall the plywood is intact. As is to be expected, there are some minor dents and scratches on the seats and the legs commensurate with their age and previous use. The varnish on the seats is worn. There are also a few dark marks on the legs and seats, and some areas of small light patches on the plywood - which might have been caused by water or another liquid. The chairs would therefore benefits from some gentle restoration (re-varnishing or oiling), which should be quite easy to do. If one so wished they could alternatively be painted - although such a treatment would not be true to the designer's original vision.
The current condition of these chairs has been taken into account in the asking price for the items.
Please study the photographs provided to make your own assessment regarding the condition of these chairs. I would be happy to provide additional photographs if required by serious potential buyers.
This is a private sale from a pet and smoke free home. The chairs have been in my family since they were originally purchased in the early 1950's and are only being sold now as I need more space.
Buyer to collect and pay cash on collection please. Regret no returns accepted. Thank.
