Tutor - English and Maths, Primary to GCSE

Personal Description: I have been teaching for 30 years in both primary and secondary schools, sixth form colleges and FE colleges in both the state and private sectors. I have a Post Graduate Diploma in Primary Education from Brighton University and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education, for teaching at GCSE and A’ level, from the London University Institute of Education. Having studied on two creative writing courses, I am a published writer and my command of the English language is excellent. I am also trained to post-graduate level as a Counsellor and this further enhances my teaching, listening and communication skills, enabling me to be patient and empathic and sensitive to student needs. Teaching/Tutoring Experience: I have taught pupils from ages 6 to 20. I have taught in a large comprehensive in Birmingham and a sixth form college just outside Southampton. In East Sussex I have taught in an Eastbourne infant school, Moira House Independent Girls School, South Downs College and Eastbourne College of Food & Fashion (now closed), where I established and ran the Business Studies Department. I have also worked as an after-school tutor for Kip-Mcgrath in both Aylesbury and Eastbourne, teaching English and Mathematics to 7-16 year olds, individually and in groups of 4. I am currently working as a private after-school tutor and have several pupils, aged from 6 to 24, to whom I am teaching English and Mathematics Tutoring Approach: I believe that one-to-one tutoring should be engaging and should enable and facilitate the pupil to achieve the best that they are capable of achieving. I do not believe in endless worksheets, but rather prefer tasks to be part of a more holistic learning experience whereby the pupil can see how their learning experience fits into the wider picture, thus making the learning more meaningful. The learning experience should be creative, dynamic and absorbing. The ideal lesson should end with the pupil being unaware that an hour has passed by, because they have been so engrossed. I use my counselling skills to ensure that pupils are listened to properly, are encouraged to achieve and that the educational experience takes into account their learning style. Furthermore, a well structured lesson should have changes of approach within it to ensure the continued engagement and attention of the pupil.
