Vietnamese Wall Plaque inlaid with Mother of Pearl.

2,850 GBP

I think this is probably a Vietnamese lacquer painting, but the distinct red sun suggests Japanese to me. Still, lacquer art is a famous ancient trade of Vietnam and they celebrate that with brightness of colour. Lacquer paintings with mother of pearl and sea shells inlay, all shown off with strong and vibrant colours are vietnamese specialties.
The piece is in 4 panels, but they are no good as individual panels as they blend together into one big picture, so the overall dimensions are 63" wide and 31" high.
I don't know if I have ever seen a set of panels as beautiful as this. Most are heavily black with images of Orientals on them and oriental houses or farming scenes. Close up the detail is astonishing.
I was wondering what price to put on them as I see them on eBay, with a range of £50 per panel up to £500 per panel or more, depending on condition, but even then, they aren't a patch on these in terms of bold imagery and strength/vividness of colour. Check them out for yourself. American eBay and antique sites regularly have these on offer at around $2500, and still I think, blimey, all that money and they're still not as nice as mine.
I'm selling because were moving, and having a massive downsize. So I've put this up for sale in the spirit of going more minimalist. But I have to say, I won't be sorry if they don't sell. They need to be hung in a public place really, where people can walk by, take a look and just go 'Wow, look at that!'.
I had an appraisal once and someone in 'the know' told me it was likely around 1930. The condition is first class for something of this age, with absolutely NO fading of the colours. Probably due to the fact that for the 30 years that I've owned it, it has been on a north facing wall and therefore is not subject to bright sunshine.
Unless you can tell me different, this seems to be one of a kind. I've been looking for another one for months with 100 different search terms that relate to; wall panels, lacquered board, oriental, mother of pearl, and on and on. NOTHING! I can't find another one, which makes it rather unique.
